Are you looking for something to do this Valentine’s Day? You could opt for the traditional approach: making reservations at a nice restaurant and upping the romantic value of your home décor with candles, lace, and an ample amount of rose petals. If you’re single, maybe your Valentine’s Day looks more like mine each year: you finish off a bag of candy hearts – followed by a box of chocolates – while watching re-runs of your favorite TV show.

Regardless of how you’ve spent your past Valentine’s Days, I’ve come across a fresh idea for this year. I and two other students in Clark University’s Professional and Continuing Education graduate program teamed up with Habitat for Humanity – Metro West /Greater Worcester to make a great idea for a Valentine’s Day fundraiser a reality. Our idea was simple – to take a holiday devoted to building and celebrating relationships and use it to help others foster meaningful relationships with their community!

Valentine’s Day Build will take place on Saturday, February 12 and Sunday, February 13th at Habitat for Humanity’s 31st and 32nd homes, located at 1 Mill Road Circle, Boylston, MA. We will be hosting 80 community volunteers to develop and celebrate their relationship with their community while building at Habitat’s Boylston homes. Saturday, February 12th will be reserved for couples wishing to give back to the community while celebrating their bond, and Sunday, February 13th will be devoted to singles hoping to learn some home improvement skills, escape the Valentine’s Day Blues, and perhaps meet that special someone. Each build day will work two shifts of 20 participants each (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.), with both groups meeting together at noon for lunch, networking and special presentations. The suggested minimum pledge goal for each Valentine’s Day Build participant is $100. Ask your friends and family to sponsor your Valentine’s Day Build shift to reach your minimum pledge goal. Come join the fun – you will work side-by-side with the Habitat’s new Boylston homeowners, raise funds to build the Boylston duplex, while learning new skills, meeting others and having fun!

Registration for this event is limited to the first 40 participants for each day on a first-come, first served basis. Reservations must be made in advance by either registering online at: http://gwhfh.volunteerhub.com or by calling Chrisy Jones, Development Director, at 508-799-9259.

The mission of Habitat’s Valentine’s Day Build program is to work together to build simple, decent, affordable homes for low-income families in need of a safe place to live. When you put your heart into it, you will feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride in giving back to the community. Proceeds from the Valentine’s Day Build will fund construction costs for the Boylston Habitat Project at 1 Mill Road Circle.

Valentine’s Day Build is the perfect solution to individuals and couples looking for a nontraditional way to celebrate the holiday. This year, ditch the flowers and candy and pick up a hammer and nails!  Join other caring citizens of Central Massachusetts as we put our hearts into providing affordable housing for low income families. Hope to see you there!
