Just received my first press release for the The Central South County Relay For Life happening this year on September 10 & 11. It may be a little late to start training, but my guess is its not too late to sign up and help raise funds for the American Cancer Society! Who hasn’t been touched by cancer these days? Take your grief and turn it into something useful. Read on for more details…

The Central South County Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held on September 10th and 11th 2010.   Walkers will go around the clock from 6 PM on Friday until Noon on Saturday in the battle against cancer.   This event will be held at Lemansky Park in Auburn.

Relay For Life is an overnight event.  Individuals from Auburn, Oxford, Millbury, Charlton, Worcester, Dudley, Spencer, Lunenberg, Milford, West Boylston, Andover, Webster, Marlborough, Holden, Boston, Grafton, Leicester, Sturbridge, E Brookfield, Boylston , Nashua NH, Thompson CT, Block Island RI, Pomfret CT, Westerly RI and other communities join together on teams for this event.  Individuals and teams will camp out around the track.  Their goal is to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.  Although teams do most of their fundraising before the event, some teams will have creative fundraisers at their campsites during relay.   All of this effort is aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well and by finding treatments and perhaps a cure for cancer.

The Relay for Life is a time to celebrate Survivors, Remember lost loved ones and Fight Back against this terrible disease.  The Central South County Relay for Life will open with Survivors and Caregivers taking the first lap around the track.  They will then be invited to enjoy a tasty meal.

The Luminaria Ceremony will take place after sundown, remembering those lost to the disease and honoring cancer survivors.  Participants will circle the track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer.  These bags will light the track all night long while team members circle the track having quiet conversations or reflecting on those remembered by the event. Theme laps such as Jimmy Buffet Hour, Crazy Hat laps or Cover All Bingo will be held throughout the night in order to help the walkers stay awake.  There will be Minute to Win It Type activities as well.

As the sun rises and people wake up more activities begin.  There are games, demonstrations, music, items for sale, contests and much more. In the late morning drawings will be held for baskets and prizes donated by the teams and local business.

The Central South County Relay for Life is a grassroot fund raising organization. At this time we have 37 teams registered,  370 Participants.  We have raised $ 35,000 towards our goal of $ 105,000.
